This week our Farmer Elliot gives us an insight into how the Water Buffalos are getting on in the Cow Barn, they are very close to giving birth so they need to be kept a close eye on! In our pen, we have three female Water Buffalo. Our oldest Buffalo Indra gave birth last year to a beautiful boy named Walter!
Walter is doing really well and is now 8-9 months old and is just about to go out to grass. One of our other Water Buffalos in the pen at three years old is very close to giving birth in just a few short weeks. This means we shall be keeping an extra close eye on her. Meaning at the end of every shift and before our shifts, we shall be checking up on her to make sure she does well.

Some interesting facts!
-Because of their proclivity for this marshy terrain, water buffalo have wide, splayed hooves that enable them to move freely in the mud without sinking too deeply
-If food is scarce, buffalo will even dive for plants growing on the beds of lakes and rivers!
-The female will carry the calf for a gestation period of 9 to 11 months before giving birth
-Once the calf is born, a water buffalo will stay with its mother for around three years.
-It has a massive head and boss (horns), a broad chest and sturdy legs. It's said to be four times stronger than an ox.
